Presidential Paddle on the Potomac

Today is George's birthday! Celebrate by visiting his home at Mount Vernon, where the new 'George Washington and His Generals' exhibit just opened, or go paddling on his famous river, the Potomac.

Spring in Washington, by Louis J. Halle, is a natural history read. Here's a line that jumped out at me from early in the book:
"The mathematicians reckon that spring begins March 21, but the mathematicians are a month behind the season the year around. For those who observe the first signs, spring comes earlier than others know."
Here on the Eastern Shore, signs of spring abound. Daffodils are poking green shoots up from the ground. A pileated woodpecker noses around the base of our big pecan tree. The maple trees, viewed from afar, bear the blush of their red blossoms.
The temperature may be low and unceasing, but these are things that give me hope for warmer days and a new season of life.
